Blog #6
Grand Summary
Emotional intelligence plays an important role in aiming to become successful with your career and building relationships with the important people in life, especially the close friends and family. In each of the sources I gathered they all share the same point as to being emotionally intelligence is having the ability of self awareness, self regulation, empathy, and social skills.
The discussions about managing our emotions regardless of the situation and handling it well is the key to having high EI. The four attributes that was mentioned are all interconnected with each other. All the authors discussed similar ideas focusing on those four attributes. Self regulation is discussed about being in control of our emotions rather than letting it control them, therefore we can make rational decisions. Self awareness is the ability to understand our own strengths and weaknesses. Empathy is the understanding of emotions, needs, and concerns of other people, in which many people can struggle with showing empathy. Lastly the fourth attribute that was discussed from all the sources are the social skills necessary to work in a group, and knowing how to develop and maintain good relationships with the people around you. Those were the similarities mentioned across all five different sources I've gathered. Although they all mentioned the same four attributes they all had different interpretations in how it can affect your surroundings.
In the source used in the first blog post they mention the advantages of high emotional intelligence in the workplace. With high EI at work increased communication among coworkers presents better trust and good understanding from one another. Improving the overall team performance and reducing stress at work.
The second blog post is focused about developing EI from a young age where we begin to experience transitions in life and becoming more independent. As soon as we become an adult, we begin to experience multiple transitions in life such as relocating to another school or frequent changes in jobs. Expectations we set may be too high so its important to set reasonable goals that are attainable.
The third blog post is the effect high EI has on helping with managing stress and emotions we feel when encountering a problem. The impact of not being able to manage our stress can deteriorate both our physical and mental health. The impacts on our mental health would be the feelings of isolation and loneliness. Another effect EI has is the performance at school and work, being able to complete our jobs correctly and going through obstacles that we may encounter like difficulty with an assignment, or task.
The fourth blog post is more focused about EI in the workplace. Employees with high EI are inclined to have a better career development and are more beneficial to the organization. The benefits listed are better team relationships and a positive work culture. EI in the workplace is an environment of colleagues supporting each other, reducing stress, giving constructive feedback, staying calm and productive under pressure, helping to resolve conflicts between team members and an friendly environment where people are free to openly express themselves.
The fifth blog post mentions the significance of schools designed to developing IQ, whereas EI is not recognized to be just as important to be taught. EI should be part of our education, as we develop to become mature individuals.
Each of the author's presents reasonable ideas surrounding EI. Ultimately it is overshadowed by IQ since it isn't part of the education system. The general population are most aware of IQ and its significance, EI should be presented just as much to help prepare with the difficulties that we are often faced with.
