Summary:
The video does a good job explaining what is emotional intelligence and the importance of its meaning and effect of a person's intelligence level. Along with the importance of developing IQ, EI should also be taught and improved.
The term intelligence is often used as a general quality to describe a person's ability to do well. Emotional intelligence is the quality that allows people to approach the many problems that are faced in our affective relationship with ourselves and other people by having patience, insight, and imagination.
A person can be successful and referred to be as clever but may be lacking in an area regarding their personal life. One could be powerful and wealthy but feel miserable on the inside, which is the emotional intelligent aspect of a person's level of intelligence. You are considered emotionally intelligent if you're able to truly interpret and recognize your current feelings. Being pessimistic towards any negative outcomes that appears is also an indicator of EI.
The video also mentions how emotional intelligence is the result of education such as how to interpret ourselves, where our emotions arise from, how our childhoods influence us, and how to navigate our fears and wishes. However education about emotions isn't taught at schools to improve on it as we age and gain experiences. Only on occasions teachers would talk about such things for example an event like mental health day where empathy is brought up then next day it's back to learning from books.
Being book smart is important and the video recognizes its significance as it leads to many achievements career wise and navigating through life. However learning and raising emotional intelligence should be learned along the other subject such as math, language, science etc. which are taught in elementary and high school. It assists with managing the emotions that we may deal with as we progress in life.
Personal Relation:
Growing up getting high marks was the goal and those achievements are highly looked up on. In the workplace it is expected to be able to do the job correctly. Whether it is at a part time job or at your desired life long career emotional intelligence is considered to be just as important. At a starting job like as a retail sales associate for example requires a lot of patience to rude customers and containing any anger from their inappropriate attitudes and behaviours. Most often people look down on those kinds of employees especially fast food workers.
When encountering rude customers it is important to stay professional and to never steep as low as them. The ability to maintain professionalism at any situation is an important trait employers look at.
