Summary:
Emotional intelligence requires having the skills to help us build stronger relationships, communication skills, and our ability to show empathy towards other people. It helps us with our success and to be able to achieve our personal and career goals.
The four attributes mentioned that increases our emotional intelligence are self management, self awareness, social awareness, and relationship management which are all interconnected. Self management is the ability to control our feelings and behaviors during any situations and taking appropriate actions rather than acting on our emotions which could result in making irrational decisions. Self awareness is understanding our own strengths and weaknesses, and recognizing how our emotions affect our thoughts and behaviors. Social awareness is being able to show empathy, understanding the emotions, needs, and concerns of other people. Finally Relationship Management is the fourth attribute mentioned which is the skills to work in a group, and knowing how to develop and maintain good relationships.
The article raise attention on the importance of having high emotional intelligence aside from having high intelligence quotient. High IQ can bring us success towards getting into our dream college or work but our EI is what leads us to help manage stress and emotions we get when countering a problem.
Having high emotional intelligence has an effect with our performance at school or work, our physical health, mental health, relationships, and our social intelligence. Performance at school and work has high valued social factors to help us navigate the social complexities. Our physical health can deteriorate when we have difficulty managing stress. Uncontrolled emotions and stress can also impact our mental health if we struggle to understand or form relationships which could result in feeling lonely and isolated. Relationships are managed better when we have a good understanding of expressing how we feel and understand how others are feeling. Lastly social intelligence is connecting you to the other people, being able to recognize friend from foe, measure another person's interest in you, and balancing your nervous system through social communication.
Personal Relation:
I feel like my EQ definitely needs improvement since I would sometimes let my emotions control my behavior and make irrational decisions I would then regret. I would also stress a lot about school since I am a huge procrastinator and schoolwork can pile up really fast with many assignments and quizzes from multiple different classes.
