The movie Inside Out is a great representation of developing one's emotional intelligence. It describes the mind of an 11 year old girl name Riley who is experiencing a huge transition in her life, trying to overcome the difficulties that comes with relocating at a young age.
They mention five lessons and the first one is managing your emotions. Emotions are in control of our behaviors. So when we are losing control of a situation its best to take a moment to observe our emotions and regain control, therefore we can make better decisions. Naturally we tend to make a decision in a split second letting our emotions take control, therefore we end up making a choice that can leave us regretting.
Another lesson is to become aware of and challenging your perceptions. The parents emotions were shown for a scenario during dinner and it showed how differently the mom and dad were understanding the situation. Challenging your perceptions and looking at things from another point of view is a helpful guide to understanding each and every person's own experience and actions to the same situations. If Riley becomes more open minded she would look at the transition as a good opportunity to try things differently.
Building relationships by developing your ability to empathize is the key theme of the movie. Riley's emotions Joy is always blocking out Sadness and is emotionally shutdown. Sadness doesn't have to be avoided, negative emotions can help with developing empathy.
The final lessons they mentioned are new identities that can be found through transitions in life and to keep expectations from the change to be attainable. Settling in to a new environment requires learning a new routine to get used to, which can be hard since it will consist of learning a new pattern. Adjusting is difficult but its doable if you set reasonable goals.
Personal Relation:
I've experienced the same situation that Riley went through in the movie. Working at a daycare would require taking a walk outside and taking the kids to a playground. Now that we moved to a new spot there aren't as many playgrounds to go to that is within a reasonable distance. Our old place also had a small indoor gym but now that we don't have one anymore indoor activities and creativity have been limited. With so many changes even the kids are heavily affected especially since the place is much smaller than the old place.
The advantages of moving to a new location is adapting to a new routine. There has been so many changes with how things are done. It has been a refreshing reset for me since the job contains a lot of repetitive tasks. The work is still the same but the way we operate has changed a lot in a good way.
I am actually amazed by this post! Truly! Especially the point of developing your ability to empathize. I have always been the kind to shutdown negative emotions and not feel or take control of them. The moment there is any emotion of sadness I remove my self from whatever brings out that emotion and that has resulted in my lack of empathy. I've never really thought about this fact and become fully aware of it until reading this post and taking a moment to analyze and relate to it. - Sherice B.
